Alissa’ s note to families…

We wish you a very happy and safe holiday! We will return on January 4th. Thank you to all for the support, care, and encouragement this term.

Craft Carousel – Tuesday December 15

We will have a craft afternoon on Tuesday afternoon where we will do several crafts and prepare for "Secret Santa" on Thursday. Secret Santa is something we do each year. The kids put some ideas of little things they might like onto stick notes, we draw names (within each class), and then we do an exchange on the last day of school before the holidays.

This year, since we haven't got to go on our usual field trip, we have decided that we have some funds to pick up little gifts rather than families sending things in. The kids can come and "shop" here for their secret buddy and put together their gifts. We also felt it was more COVID friendly than having everyone send things in from outside the school.

Showcase of Learning...

We are finding ways to share learning with you! Both classes now have ePortfolios set up and if you haven't already received an invite via email to view it keep checking!

We are planning to post some of the kids' learning pieces from this term. They will also bring home some of their learning samples to share with you. We will send home an updated Student Learning Plan on Wednesday, December 16 as a communication of student learning for this term.

Secret Santa gift exchange and Last day of School – Thursday – Festival of fun and excitement for the holidays

We will have a wonderful day of festivities and celebrating the season together before  the break. Goodies and crafts and songs : )

Earthquake Comfort Kits

Noone wants to think about a disaster happening, but it is so important that we are prepared for one anyway. We have been preparing here at the school with water and food.

One of the important items for your child is some comfort from home, this is why we request a letter and a toy or stuffy from you, to be able to give that to your child in case of an Emergency.

Please over the holidays, write a letter and choose something to keep here at the school just in case. We will secure the items and disperse them only if need be. Thank you for your attention to this.

Student and Staff Health checks – Updated symptoms list

The Health check document from the School District will be updated after today.  Please refer to it if your child is experiencing any of the following symptoms of illness, and choose to stay home until they are recovered from any illness. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding through these difficult times.

Chills

Cough or worsening of chronic cough

Shortness of breath

Sore throat

Runny nose

Island Hearts Of Hope (replacing Santas Workshop)

Island Hearts of Hope was started in August of 2017  By Shellie Yates Smyrichinsky, Deb Muckle & Tamara Meggitt as a way to show their support to families during the fires that hit so hard that year. Since then we have grown and welcome Sumiko Playfair as well as Arielle Muckle to the team. Island Hearts of Hope assists with various projects within our community. This year, it was brought to our attention that due to COVID-19,  Santas Workshop, which began in 1958 as well as Secret Santa which has been helping with toys for approx 20 years will not be able to run their programs. Knowing how much they have supported families over the years,( over 1000 children last year alone )  We knew that this would mean a lot of children left without Christmas Especially with the current global pandemic.  We are pleased to be able to step in and help fill the gap. This however will take a true community to make it happen so that we will be able to collect and deliver gifts to families in need in a COVID safe manner.  Although this year will look very different from the years past, from the work that both Santas Workshop as well as Secret Santa have done,  we hope that  our efforts, along with the community, we will  bring Christmas toys to the kids of the Comox Valley.

School Closures, Power Outages, Ferry Cancellations

Our procedures for power outages and ferry cancellations that may affect regular operations of our school are as follows: if the power is out before school starts, the Principal/Vice Principal will contact the School District to make a decision on closing the school. If the school is to be closed we will begin the emergency call outs. If the power goes out during the day, we will make a decision based on information we receive about how long we will be without power. We may need to close the school. If this is to happen we will contact parents/guardians/emergency contacts. For this reason, and in the case of other emergencies, it is VERY important we have your verification forms with alternate emergency contacts. If School District #71 is closed due to weather conditions, Hornby School will also be closed unless otherwise stated. Again, the phone tree call out will be in effect and all efforts will be made to ensure call outs happen early in the morning.

If there are power outages we may not get through to your phone line; please be sure to listen to the local radio stations at 97.3 The Eagle and/or 98.9 The Goat, and if you can, check the School District website for notices on school closures at: https://www.comoxvalleyschools.ca/. Usually closures are announced prior to 6:30AM.

Please note: contact information we have on file is provided by parents at the beginning of the school year when you review and sign the student verification form; If there are any changes in contact information throughout the year (i.e. phone, address, etc.) please notify the school as soon as possible so this can be updated in our system.

Pick-ups and Drop-offs

At this time, only School District #71 staff and students are authorized to be on the deck or in the modulars to help us maintain physical distancing and cleaning requirements. We have set up an area at the front entrance where you are able to pick-up resources or library books arranged in advance, or drop off completed work or books. Please use the sanitizer provided, and be sure to allow for physical distance if there are other people in the line.
