Hornby Island Community School Update
(as of January 19, 2019)
Happy New Year everyone! As you have likely noticed, our new modular school is now in place! What an incredible process to witness. This complex project, evolving through deluge of rain, mud, snow/sleet/ice, wind, power outages, travelling over land, water and through the air, and into place at the site took such coordination and demonstrated teamwork in action! Much gratitude to Alan Fletcher Construction (AFC) crew, SD#71 Director of Operations, Ian Heselgrave, Director of Instruction K-12 Geoff Manning, and Assistant Superintendant Tom Demeo, and all others contributing time, effort, and support to this project.
Throughout our journey, our staff has received such support and encouragement. Our parent community delivered heartwarming lunches and goodies to us, and we had a fun filled arts afternoon with the Natural History Stewards creating owl art and art cards. We may not have the learning space we once had, but our human connections and opportunities for connecting with our Hornby Is. Community partners remain and grow.
We finished up before the break with a field trip to town where we took on an action packed day of bowling, visiting the Regional Library, and skating. We are currently in the process of planning both on island and off island trips for the rest of our 2018-19 school year. We ended our first term focus of “Cooperation” with a Showcase of Learning on December 19. We were so proud to see the kids demonstrating their learning, and presenting their projects. We have now begun our Term Two focus of “Community” which will take us to spring break. Kindergarten registration for the 2019-2020 year will be open from February 19th-21st at our school office. Yes! We are already into registration and staffing processes for next year! Please contact us for more information.
